The 2026 Commonwealth Games officially got underway today in Glasgow, Scotland, marking the start of one of the biggest multi-sport events in the Commonwealth. The Games will run from July 23 to August 2, with athletes from 74 nations competing across 10 sports.
India has sent a 125-member contingent featuring a blend of Olympic champions, experienced campaigners, and promising young athletes. Despite the Games having a reduced sports programme compared to previous editions, India is expected to challenge for medals in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, cycling, para sports, and lawn bowls.
Leading India’s campaign are some of the country’s biggest sporting stars, including Neeraj Chopra (Javelin Throw), Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting), and Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing). All three are among the top medal contenders and will play a key role in India’s quest for gold.
The Glasgow edition has been designed as a more compact event, featuring 10 sports instead of the larger programme seen in previous Commonwealth Games. Even so, the competition is expected to deliver high-quality action, with more than 200 medal events scheduled over the next ten days.
Indian fans will be closely following the performances of both established champions and emerging talents as the country aims to add another successful chapter to its Commonwealth Games history. The opening days of the competition will feature events in athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, weightlifting, and para sports, where India hopes to make an early impact on the medal table.
